In 2024, Helping Hand Day took us to Epping, where the Carpentry Australia team partnered with EcoDeck to transform a community space into something more practical, durable and built to last.

Over several days on site, EcoDeck generously donated around 700 linear metres of decking, making it possible to deliver a high-quality result that the community can rely on for years to come. Once the framing was complete, skilled tradies worked efficiently to lay the majority of the deck, a great example of what can be achieved when trades collaborate with a shared purpose.

But what made this project special wasn’t just the build. It was knowing the finished space will be used by locals day after day, a place for people to gather, connect and spend time together in an environment that’s more safe, more durable, and more welcoming.

This result wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity, effort, and teamwork of everyone involved. From EcoDeck’s hands-on support to the commitment and pride shown by every tradie on site, this project captured exactly what Helping Hand Day stands for.

Helping Hand Day reminds us that giving back isn’t about profit, it’s about purpose. When good people come together, they strengthen communities, build lasting connections, and create spaces that truly matter.

We’re proud to work alongside partners like EcoDeck, and we look forward to continuing to build not just structures, but stronger communities.

At Carpentry Australia, Helping Hand Day is about more than building. It’s about using our skills to make a real difference in people’s lives. It’s about recognising the quiet heroes in our communities, the ones who give tirelessly to others, and creating something meaningful as a way to say thank you.

Every project is an opportunity to create something lasting, strengthen connections, and say a heartfelt thank you to those who quietly show up for others day after day.

In 2024, Helping Hand Day brought us to the Gold Coast to honour Matt Scott, a dedicated ICU nurse whose compassion and tireless work touch countless lives. Matt spends his days caring for people in their most vulnerable moments, a demanding, high-pressure job that often goes unseen, yet the difference he makes is profound.

To show our gratitude, Carpentry Australia, together with our partners, transformed Matt’s home into a safer, more functional, and welcoming space for him and his family.

The project included major carpentry and landscaping upgrades: new stairs, improved access points, and refreshed outdoor areas turned previously unsafe, cluttered spaces into areas of comfort and security. These improvements don’t just make daily life easier, they create a lasting reminder of the community’s appreciation and care.

What truly makes Helping Hand Day special is the incredible people behind it. Tradespeople from across Queensland volunteered their time, expertise, and energy, braving challenging weather conditions to deliver something extraordinary. While the physical changes to Matt’s home were remarkable, the impact went far beyond timber and stone, it was about connection, support, and a shared sense of purpose.

Helping Hand Day is a celebration of community. It reminds us what it means to show up for one another, to offer our skills, our hearts, and our time, in service of someone who has spent years serving others.

We are proud to honour people like Matt Scott, and even prouder to be part of a trade community that embodies generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making a difference.

This time, Helping Hand Day took us to Eynesbury Primary School in Melbourne’s west. Since opening in 2020, the school has grown rapidly and now has more than 450 students. With enrolments increasing each year, the playground was struggling to keep up, and the school needed more room for students to play, connect and stay active.

Through our partnership with Channel 7’s Sunrise, the school reached out for support. The goal was simple: create a safe, fun space that students can enjoy for years to come.

So, before sunrise, tradies from Carpentry Australia joined forces with industry partners, volunteers and Bunnings, who generously donated materials, to build two brand-new Gaga pits.

The day was a true team effort. Skilled tradespeople donated their time and expertise, working side by side with pride, care and a shared commitment to delivering something special. The result is more than just new play equipment, it’s a space that will support student wellbeing, encourage active play, and bring kids together for years to come.

And what we built was more than play equipment.

It’s a space that will support student wellbeing, encourage active play, and create countless moments of laughter, connection and confidence, for years to come.

Helping Hand Day is a reminder that giving back isn’t always about money.
Sometimes, it’s about turning up, working together, and leaving something behind that truly matters.

Starting your journey as a chippy apprentice is exciting, but the road to becoming a skilled carpenter can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Carpentry Australia to bring you these 5 essential tips you need to help you lay a solid foundation for your career.

Whether you’re just getting your hands on the tools or you’re in your third year, tick each tip off knowing that you’ve safeguarded your future the right way.

1. Tools of the Trade

Having the proper tools is key to getting the job done right and making life easier on-site. If you’re on a budget, start with the essentials and invest in quality tools over time. Look out for apprentice discounts or second-hand tools in good condition.

Must-Have Tools? Hammer, tape measure, chisels, nail gun, spirit level, square, and a sturdy tool belt to carry them all. Keep the tools clean, store them properly, and don’t forget to sharpen your chisels regularly to make them last longer.

Tools are your bread and butter, so don’t skimp on quality. Cheap tools will break, and you’ll end up spending more in the long ru

2. Insurance You Actually Need

You’re probably covered by your employer’s workers’ compensation and public liability insurance. But do you have all the cover you need – for your tools, your ute, and accidents that happen outside of work?

Let’s face it, things don’t always go to plan. Tools can get stolen, accidents happen, and there may be times you can’t work. With imar, you can make sure your livelihood is protected with the tradie insurance cover that suits you.

3. Safety Smarts

Safety isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about making sure you go home in one piece every day. You’re working with sharp tools, heavy materials, and sometimes at heights. Back to basics, always wear your PPE (steel-capped boots, gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat). Learn how to use the right tools properly (don’t improvise!), and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re unsure.

4. Expand Your Network

Carpentry is as much about who you know as what you know. Building a strong network can open doors to new opportunities, mentorship, and even job offers. As a Carpentry Australia member, you can gain access to exclusive events, training programs, and a community ready to support you. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, and learn from others in the industry.

5. Budgeting & Government Support

Managing your finances as an apprentice can be tough, but there’s help available. The Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) Apprentice Incentive offers up to $10,000 for full-time apprentices in the housing construction sector. If you’re training for certifications on the priority occupation list, you may also be eligible for up to $2,500 to help with living expenses. Check with your local government for additional support programs.

6. A Plan for the Future

Decide what you want to achieve during your apprenticeship and beyond. Explore different areas of carpentry, from cabinetry, framing, roofing, and project management. Talk to your boss or mentor about your goals. They’ve been where you are and can offer advice to help you get where you want to go.

As part of Carpentry Australia, apprentices receive free membership that they can utilise for the lifetime of their traineeship – get involved and get support immediately! Take advantage of Carpentry Australia’s resources, training programs, industry updates, and networking opportunities.

Your apprenticeship is just the beginning. Whether you want to specialise, start your own business, or become a master chippy, these tips will help lay the foundation to get you there.

Follow these tips, stay up to date with industry news from Carpentry Australia, and protect your tools and livelihood with imar.

2026 isn’t about grinding harder; it’s about working smarter. A smoother, more productive year starts before the first cut is made. Here’s how tradies can set themselves up for success in the year ahead.

1. Get Your Insurance in Order

Insurance might not be the most exciting part of running a business, but it’s what keeps you on site. Taking just 30 minutes to review your cover, update your details and ensure your crew is covered can save hours of frustration later.

A quick insurance check beats getting knocked back at the gate every time. Not sure where you stand? Carpentry Australia can guide you through the process, whether that’s pointing you in the right direction or connecting you with the right support through our network.

2. Give Your Tools Some Love

Blunt blades, dying batteries and tired drills cost you time and money. A simple tool refresh sharpen, service, test and tidy means you start the year operating at full tilt, not playing catch-up.

3. Set Strong Habits

It might sound basic, but planning your week every Sunday and maintaining clear communication with your crew makes the difference between chaos and productivity.

Carpentry Australia Members get access to resources, templates and support designed to help tradies run smoother, safer, and more profitable businesses. Streamlined systems make tough weeks a lot easier.

4. Lock in Materials Early

January is the perfect time to secure your orders before lead times blow out and prices creep up. Stock your essentials, secure specialty items and keep your jobs moving while others are scrambling.

5. Mindset Matters

Write your goals down. Whether it’s landing bigger jobs, improving margins, taking on an apprentice or finishing on time more often, clarity creates momentum.

If one of your goals for 2026 is to step up, like pursuing your Builder’s Licence, scaling your business, or moving into higher-value work, Carpentry Australia can help you map out that path. Our Builders Licence support is designed specifically for tradies who want to level up without getting lost in the paperwork.

6. Start with a Discovery Call

Not sure where to start? Book a Carpentry Australia Discovery Call. It’s a casual chat to work out where your business is at, what’s holding you back and how you can improve in 2026.

A strong year isn’t built by chance. It’s built by preparation, discipline and backing yourself with the right support.

New Year. New Goals. Stronger Foundations. 2026 is yours to build.

Australia’s building and construction industry continues to face growing workforce pressure, and traditional recruitment pathways alone are no longer enough to meet demand. At Carpentry Australia, we believe the solution lies in thinking more broadly about where we source talent and recognising that capability, commitment, and work ethic are not defined by background.

Through our involvement in Launch into Work programs delivered across Victoria and New South Wales, supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, Carpentry Australia has supported individuals who may not have had a typical upbringing, stable schooling, or clear career pathways to successfully enter the construction industry.

These programs are delivered in partnership with high-quality registered training organisations, including Orange College in New South Wales and Swinburne University of Technology in Victoria. Together, we deliver programs that combine practical trade skills, essential employability and soft skills, and real on-site work experience, ensuring participants are genuinely job ready and supported by individual mentors throughout their journey.

The results speak for themselves. Over 50% of candidates who enter the program successfully transition into employment, many with Carpentry Australia member employers. Those who secure roles consistently demonstrate unmatched passion, strong reliability, and a clear commitment to building a long-term career in the industry. Employers regularly highlight the value these individuals bring, particularly their motivation and appreciation for the opportunity.

For employers, this highlights the importance of looking beyond traditional recruitment channels to access motivated, committed talent. For government, these outcomes demonstrate how targeted investment can deliver measurable employment results while strengthening an industry critical to Australia’s economic future.

Carpentry Australia’s mission is to build a better Australia by creating opportunity, supporting industry, and developing a skilled, resilient, and inclusive workforce.

The post Leading With Humility: Michael Ferguson and Ninety Three Group first appeared on Carpentry Australia.

]]>
In an industry that often puts the spotlight on growth, numbers, and speed, Michael Ferguson stands out for a very different reason. Yes, he’s built a strong and respected business through Ninety Three Group, but what really defines Michael is the way he shows up for people. Quietly. Consistently. Without ever needing recognition.

Michael didn’t take the traditional path into carpentry. Before picking up the tools, he spent years working at the Chase Hotel, working his way up through hospitality management. It was stable, it was familiar, but it never quite felt right. A four-month trip through Europe gave him the space to step back and reassess what he actually wanted. What became clear was that he needed something hands-on, something tangible, something where you could look back at the end of the day and see the result of your effort.

At 23, Michael started his apprenticeship as a mature-age apprentice, and that decision shaped the way he leads to this day. Having lived a bit of life before starting his trade gave him perspective. He understands what it’s like to start again, to commit fully to learning, and to earn your place through effort rather than entitlement. It’s why he has such respect for apprentices who genuinely want to be there, whether they’re mature-age or fresh out of school.

Despite growing Ninety Three Group into a successful operation, Michael remains incredibly grounded. He doesn’t lead with ego, and he’s never been interested in playing the role of “the boss.” He leads alongside his team, takes ownership when things don’t go to plan, and is always quick to share credit when they do. Success, in his eyes, is something built together.

That humility runs right through the culture of his business. People are valued, communication is open, and everyone understands where they fit and why their role matters. Michael genuinely wants his team to feel like they’re part of something bigger than just another job. He wants them to grow, to feel supported, and to take pride in the work they do.

What really sets Michael apart, though, is that his values don’t stop at the job site. Over the years, he has been involved in multiple Helping Hand Days, consistently giving up his time, skills, and leadership to support others in the community. There’s no commercial upside to this work. No contracts, no invoices, no expectations. It’s simply about doing the right thing and using the trade for good.

It’s this ongoing commitment that has seen Michael recognised as a true champion within the Carpentry Australia community. Not because he chased the title, but because he embodies what it actually means. He shows up. He contributes. He leads by example.
Sharing many of the same qualities as Habitat carpenters Brad and Tim, Michael believes that real leadership is quiet and consistent. It’s about looking after your people, lifting others where you can, and understanding that the trade is bigger than any one individual. Like them, he understands that the legacy you leave isn’t just measured in buildings, but in people.

Four years ago, Michael reached out to Carpentry Australia, looking for connection, growth, and a better way to build both his business and his team. From that first conversation, it was clear that the values aligned. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. He’s continued to invest in himself through further education, work toward his Builder’s Licence, and implement systems that allow his team to grow alongside him rather than be left behind.

Michael Ferguson’s story is a reminder that success in carpentry doesn’t have to come at the cost of people. That humility and ambition can exist together. And that when you genuinely care about your team and your community, recognition follows naturally.

A new generation of aspiring tradespeople has taken a major step toward their careers, with Novaskill Singleton proudly celebrating the graduation of its latest Certificate II in Construction Pathways cohort. The program — made possible through the generous support of the Singleton Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF), a partnership between Singleton Council, Glencore and The Bloomfield Group — continues to demonstrate the powerful impact that locally delivered, industry-backed training can have on regional communities.

Held at Singleton’s Pirtek Park, the graduation event brought together graduates, families, industry partners, local leaders, and employers to acknowledge the achievements of eight participants who successfully completed the nationally accredited qualification.

Hands-On Training That Leads to Real Jobs

Funded through the CEDF, the program enabled Novaskill to deliver high-quality, practical construction training right in the heart of Singleton. Students gained foundational carpentry and construction skills through hands-on workshops, on-site projects, and structured learning guided by experienced trainers.

That practical experience is already paying off. Five participants have already secured apprenticeships or employment, and Novaskill is continuing to connect the remaining graduates with local employers hungry for new talent.

This outcome reinforces an important message: when industry, education providers, and local government work together, real pathways are created — and people’s lives change.

Building Skills While Giving Back

One of the standout features of the course was its direct contribution to the Singleton community.

Under trainer supervision, students constructed picnic tables and a new ticket booth, now permanently installed at Pirtek Park for the Singleton Greyhounds. These are not only practical additions to local facilities but also lasting reminders of what community-driven training can achieve.

Every cut, nail, and measurement represented the students’ progress — and the industry’s future workforce learning the importance of quality workmanship and community pride.

Industry and Community Leaders Show Strong Support

The significance of the program was highlighted by the attendance of key community and industry leaders, including:

 • Dan Repacholi MP
 • Mayor Sue Moore
 • Deputy Mayor Cr Sue George (CEDF Chair)
 • Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr, General Manager, Singleton Council
 • Local employers and community partners

Their presence speaks volumes about the value of investing in skills development and supporting the next generation of tradespeople.

Novaskill CEO Shae Prescott acknowledged this in her address, emphasising the importance of local collaboration.

“This program has provided real pathways into employment for local people. By bringing construction training to Singleton, we’ve been able to build both skills and community capacity,” Ms Prescott said.
“We’re incredibly proud of our graduates, our staff, and the partnerships that made this possible.”

Industry Partnerships Making a Difference

This program was strengthened by the support of many local businesses who contributed materials, tools, guidance, and encouragement. Novaskill extends thanks to:

 • Singleton Council
 • Bunnings Singleton
 • DeWalt
 • Carpentry Australia
 • Reece Plumbing
 • Eaton’s Mitre 10 Singleton

For Carpentry Australia, this is exactly the type of initiative that aligns with the organisation’s mission: supporting the development of skilled tradespeople, promoting excellence within the carpentry industry, and building strong, community-focused career pathways.

Strengthening the Future Workforce

With increasing demand for skilled carpenters and construction trades across NSW and the Hunter region, programs like this are not just beneficial — they are essential.

Novaskill continues to deliver training that:

 • Responds to industry needs
 • Provides clear pathways into apprenticeships
 • Supports regional economic development
 • Connects job seekers with real employment outcomes

By working closely with councils, employers, and community groups, they continue to ensure that local people have access to the skills they need to succeed in local industries.

A Bright Future for Singleton’s Emerging Tradespeople

As the graduates move into apprenticeships and entry-level roles, they carry with them not only practical carpentry skills but also confidence, teamwork experience, and a sense of achievement. Their success sends a strong message to others in the community who may be thinking about a career in construction.

The partnership between Novaskill, the CEDF, industry supporters, and employers demonstrates what is possible when everyone works together to invest in people, skills, and community outcomes.

For Carpentry Australia, this is another shining example of the value of industry-aligned training — and the importance of celebrating the success stories that inspire the next generation of carpenters.

Champion Member Spotlight: Beau from Beaumade Builds

Every now and then, someone in the trade stands out not because they shout the loudest, but because they simply get on with the work, lead by example and steadily build something worth paying attention to. That’s exactly what Beau from Beaumade Builds has done. His journey from apprentice to trusted builder is a story of discipline, growth and genuine care for his team and clients.

A Career Built on Hard Work and Focus

Beaumade Builds started small. A couple of team members, a handful of carpentry packages, and some renovation jobs like decks, alfrescos and extensions. At the same time, Beau was pushing himself to take the next step and get his builders licence.
He spent six to eight months in full focus mode, cutting out the noise and putting in the hours. That commitment became the turning point for the business. It showed the kind of discipline and follow through that has shaped everything he has built since.

The Power of a Strong Team

One of the biggest factors behind Beau’s growth is the value he places on building a solid team. He backs qualified tradespeople because he knows they lift the standard on site and free him up to focus on the bigger picture.
Daily check ins, detailed site diaries and systems that actually get used make the business run smoothly. Beau understands that when the behind the scenes processes are tight, the quality of the work naturally follows.

Clear, Honest Communication

Anyone who has worked in construction knows communication can make or break a project. This is an area where Beau really shines.
He is big on being upfront, documenting everything and keeping everyone in the loop. Clients, architects, subcontractors, his own team everyone knows where things stand. That consistency takes the stress out of jobs and builds real trust.

Leadership That Builds People

What really separates Beau is how he treats the people around him. He is approachable but firm, supportive but clear on expectations. His team knows they can talk to him and they also know he wants to see them grow.
Through development plans, goal setting and regular conversations, he gives his team a genuine pathway forward. It creates a culture where people care about the work and take pride in being part of the business.

A Strong Sense of Community

Beaumade Builds also plays an active role in giving back. The team gets involved in community projects, using their skills to help others while strengthening their bond as a group. It speaks volumes about Beau’s values and the type of business he is building.

Passing on Practical, Real World Advice

Beau’s journey is packed with lessons for anyone coming up in the trade. He talks openly about the importance of having the right insurance, looking after your health and taking advantage of the opportunities the trades offer especially for those who didn’t click with traditional schooling.
He is proof that the path to success is wide open for people who are willing to work for it.

Looking Ahead

These days, Beaumade Builds has multiple jobs on the go, a strong team culture and a reputation built on respect, reliability and quality.
Beau’s story shows what is possible when you combine discipline, communication, good systems and genuine care for people. It is a blueprint for long term success and a reminder that great businesses grow from strong foundations.

Beau is the definition of a Champion Member someone who raises the bar not just for himself, but for everyone around him. And with the momentum he has built, it is clear he is only just warming up.
